How to prepare concrete for epoxy resin: a practical checklist
A properly prepared substrate is 80% of the success of any resin floor. Even the best epoxy resin will not perform its role if applied to improperly cleaned or damp concrete. That is why we have prepared a simple checklist that shows step by step how to prepare concrete before applying Epidian Floor systems.
1. Check the concrete moisture
- The concrete must be dry – max. 4% moisture (measured using the CM method).
- If the substrate is new, wait for it to fully cure and dry.
💡 Too damp substrate = risk of bubbles and resin delamination.
2. Remove contaminants and cement laitance
- Best methods: shot blasting, milling, grinding.
- The substrate should be rough and load-bearing.
- Remove dust with an industrial vacuum cleaner.
3. Repair defects and cracks
- Fill gaps with epoxy resin mixed with quartz sand.
- Level defects with epoxy mortar.
💡 This will ensure the floor is evenly loaded and prevent cracking.
4. Prime the surface
- Use Epidian Floor G1 (epoxy primer).
- Apply with a roller or trowel.
- If necessary, apply two coats – a second coat if the substrate is highly absorbent.
5. Add quartz sand (optional)
- You can sprinkle quartz sand on the fresh primer.
- This provides better adhesion for the next layer and increases mechanical resistance.
6. Ready for system application
Now you can proceed to apply the selected system:
- C1 thin-layer – for garages and warehouses,
- C1 with sand – for workshops and industrial plants,
- C1 with flakes – decorative, for offices and homes,
- S1 self-leveling – smooth, aesthetic, and easy to maintain.
Summary
Preparing concrete is a key stage that determines the durability of the floor. Just follow the checklist to ensure the Epidian Floor system works as intended and lasts for years.
