Epoxy Resin Tables – A Comparison of Three Techniques: River Table, Top Coat, and 3D Cast

Stoły z żywicy epoksydowej – porównanie trzech technik: River Table, Top Coat i 3D Cast - Gaz-Bud Pro

Epoxy resin tables are a combination of nature, craftsmanship, and modern technology. Their unique appearance makes them an increasingly popular centerpiece in interiors, from home living rooms to offices and restaurants.
But before you decide to have one made or buy such a table, it is worth knowing that there are different techniques for creating it – and each produces a completely different effect.

1. River Table – a classic table with a resin "river"

This style is the epitome of modern design combined with the natural beauty of wood. Epoxy resin – clear or tinted – is poured between two natural-edge boards (live edge).

Effect:

  • a realistic "river" flowing through the center of the table,
  • a beautiful contrast between warm wood and cool resin,
  • a noticeable wood texture on the sides, a smooth surface in the middle.

Advantages:

  • a striking appearance, ideal for premium interiors,
  • the ability to tint and shape the resin as desired,
  • moderate material consumption (approx. 3–5 liters for a 90×60 cm tabletop).

Disadvantages:

  • requires precise leveling and proper sealing of the mold,
  • the wood must be perfectly dry (below 10–12% moisture content).

2. Top Coat – a thin layer of resin on the wood surface

This method involves covering the entire tabletop surface with a thin layer of resin (approx. 1–2 mm).
The wood remains fully visible, but gains a deep shine and full protection against moisture and dirt.

Effect:

  • a surface as shiny as glass,
  • the wood looks as if it is under a clear pane of glass,
  • a very modern, elegant style.

Advantages:

  • easy to make,
  • low resin consumption (approx. 1–2 liters),
  • resistance to water, alcohol, stains, and daily use.

Disadvantages:

  • lack of natural wood texture to the touch,
  • in case of scratches, the entire surface must be restored or polished.

3. 3D Cast – wood completely submerged in resin

This is the most advanced and striking technique. The wood is completely submerged in clear resin, creating the impression that it is floating in a block of glass.

Effect:

  • spectacular 3D depth,
  • the impression that the wood is "floating" in a clear surface,
  • perfect smoothness and durability from every side.

Advantages:

  • a unique, luxurious appearance,
  • full resistance to water and dirt,
  • ideal for artistic and designer projects.

Disadvantages:

  • high resin consumption (up to 8–12 liters),
  • long curing time and risk of overheating,
  • difficult sanding and cutting after curing.

How to choose the right technique for your project

  • If you want to combine a natural character with modern design – choose River Table.
  • If you value easy cleaning and an elegant shine – choose Top Coat.
  • If you dream of a unique, exclusive piece of furniture with a 3D depth effect – go for 3D Cast.

Each of these methods has its own application. The choice depends on whether the priority is a natural appearance, practicality, or visual effect.

Summary

Epoxy resin tables are a unique way to create a piece of furniture that combines the warmth of wood and the modernity of resin.
Depending on the chosen technique, you can achieve a natural river, mirror shine, or full 3D submersion.

Each of these projects can be done yourself – all you need is good epoxy resin, a mold, the right temperature, and patience.
